International Men’s Day: Over 1k men die by suicide in five years in Gujarat
Updated: Nov 19th, 2024
In Gujarat, over 1,000 men ended their lives in the last five years due to issues related to marriage and career. The traditional notion that men must be emotionally stoic and not show vulnerability persists even today.
However, the reality is that men, too, can experience emotional breakdowns despite not being able to express their feelings openly.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report, from 2018 to 2022, 1,062 men and 700 women in Gujarat died by suicide due to marital problems.
In 2022, 66 men took their lives due to difficulties in getting married, 50 due to extramarital affairs, and 61 due to divorce. Moreover, a total of 1,475 men ended their lives due to family disputes.
Career-related challenges have also significantly contributed to the rise in suicides among men, with the numbers increasing from 106 in 2018 to 329 in 2022.
Unemployment and business-related issues are among the primary factors responsible for these suicides. During the same period, 70 women also died by suicide due to career-related challenges. Love-related issues led to 390 men and 253 women taking their lives in 2022.
Psychiatrists emphasise that men are just as sensitive as women. The difference lies in their reluctance to express emotions openly. It is essential for men to share their feelings with close friends or family members. Suicide is never a solution, and expressing emotions can often lead to finding a way forward.
