At the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS) on the first day of the summit on Jan 10, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal said that India and UAE aspire to expand their bilateral trade to $100bn (₹8.30 lakh cr).

Goyal also highlighted efforts that were underway to facilitate rupee-dirham trade.

He said bilateral trade has increased under the India UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). He also highlighted key collaborations such as the India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor and initiatives to promote Rupay and facilitate direct rupee-dirham trade.

Goyal highlighted the UAE-India business relationship across various sectors, such as the plan to establish a Bharat Park in the Jebel Ali Free Zone under the guidance of DP World Group CEO Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem.

Indo-US ties highlighted

US Consul General in Mumbai Mike Hankey highlighted shared values between India and Washington and said that the partnership between the two countries is one of the most consequential in the world at the summit on Jan 10.

Addressing a seminar titled ‘Shaping the Future: The Evolving India-US Bilateral Relationship’ at the Summit, he expressed a keen interest in India’s developments in AI and the opportunity to test and evaluate these projects.

“The takeaway from this summit for the US is not just to sell products in India but to co-develop with Indian partners,” Hankey said.

In a nod to the strong educational and cultural ties, Hankey revealed that “the Mumbai office has issued more student visas than any other office globally”.

He also pointed out the significant presence of the Gujarati community in the US, with 1.5 million people from Gujarat “contributing to the robust Indo-US relations”.
