I-Day 2024: Four major cities to hold Tiranga Yatras

With Independence Day around the corner, preparations have begun in Gujarat as a 3-km-long ‘Tiranga Yatra’ is planned across four major cities.
To commemorate the 78th Independence Day, various events and initiatives are being planned across the state. Tiranga Yatras (flag processions) will be held in Rajkot on Aug 10, Surat on Aug 11, Vadodara on Aug 12, and in Ahmedabad on Aug 13.
A total of eight major cities, 156 municipalities, 14,292 gram panchayats, and more than 2,200 institutions will participate in these yatras.
The state government aims to distribute 50 lakh flags across all districts. Traffic police will distribute flags at major intersections, and the transport department will provide flags to passengers on state transport buses. In Ahmedabad, over a lakh people are expected to participate in the Tiranga Yatra.
The education department has organised patriotic fancy dress competitions, drawing competitions, and rangoli events in educational institutions.
While the government has decided to distribute 50 lakh flags to the citizens, it raises concerns about breaking the flag code.
With every household, shop, industry, government office, private establishment, and even carts flying the ‘Tiranga’, here is how to maintain the dignity of India's beloved flag.
How to manage our national flag?
Whenever the national flag is on display, it should occupy the position of honour and should be distinctly placed. A damaged or dishevelled national flag should not be displayed, states the Flag Code of India.
The national flag shall not be used as a festoon, rosette,
bunting, or in any other manner for decoration. It also shall not be allowed to touch the ground or the floor or trail in the water.
What to do when you see an Indian flag on the ground and how to dispose of it?
As per paragraph 2.2 of the Flag Code of India, if the national the flag is damaged, it shall be destroyed as a whole in private, preferably by burning or any other method considering the dignity of the national flag.
