IMD Issues Red Alert as Heavy Rains Lash Gujarat; Farmers Rejoice as Crops Revive

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert of extremely heavy rain for eight districts across southern and east-central Gujarat through 1 pm today (September 13), bringing vital relief to agriculture while putting civic authorities on alert.

Under the latest IMD nowcast, the highest level red warning covers Bhavnagar, Surat, Bharuch, Narmada, Navsari, Dang, Tapi, and Chhota Udepur districts. Weather officials simultaneously placed 10 districts under an orange alert for heavy downpours, including Rajkot, Amreli, Botad, Anand, Vadodara, Panchmahal, Dahod, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Light rainfall alerts remain active across the rest of the state.

Lifeline for Wilting Crops

The return of the monsoon locally termed 'Meghraja' has sparked widespread celebration among farming communities in Chhota Udepur and Amreli districts, where dry spells had threatened standing crops.

In Chhota Udepur, continuous heavy spells sent local rivers and streams overflowing. Further west in Amreli, persistent steady rain revitalised crops that were beginning to wilt, providing a crucial lifeline for agricultural yields across the region.

Naswadi Water Crisis Averted

Heavy precipitation across Naswadi taluka caused the Ashwin river to flow bank-to-bank with fresh inflow. Local officials confirmed that the surge of surface water has effectively averted the immediate drinking and irrigation water crisis that was looming over Naswadi. With agricultural fields flooded with freshwater, standing crops have secured critical nourishment.

Downpours were similarly reported across multiple panthaks in Amreli, including Babra, Khambha, Lathi, Savarkundla, Dhari, and Rajula. Drizzle starting late last night turned into heavy morning rains, inundating fields in Babra city as well as the surrounding villages of Darad, Jambarwala, Khakharia, Pansada, and Garni.

In Rajula, steady rain across Victor, Mandal, and Dungar villages provided timely hydration to vulnerable fields, turning around crop prospects across southern Saurashtra.
