In an alarming turn of events, 50% of the water samples taken from Sabarmati River’s 14 sewage treatment plants were found to be contaminated, pointing at polluted water still being dumped into the river. The illegal connections from the societies to the mega pipeline have also come to light.

The numbers were revealed in a detailed report submitted to the court by the Court Assistant (amicus curiae) on June 23 in the hearing of a suo motu filed by the Gujarat high court.

A strong demand for action was made against Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) and Ranjit Buildcon. Ranjit Buildcon is an agency working on the Sabarmati riverfront. It has built its own artificial cesspool near the river in its Phase-II operation, due to which the polluted water is accumulating in one place. This has adversely affected the river water.

The Ahmedabad Mega Clean Association body  had complained through nine different mails to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) authorities about the society’s illegal connections being attached to the Sabarmati river pipeline.

In such a case, the high court had earlier ordered action, including criminal action. However, still, no actions or clarifications were made by AMC and GPCB authorities.
