A 26-year-old woman has complained to the Shahpur police alleging that her husband verbally abused her over the phone and pronounced instant triple talaq during a call following a dispute related to food sent from her parental home.

According to the complaint filed on January 27, Mumtaz Banu Sheikh, a homemaker and resident of Meghaninagar, stated that she had been staying at her mother’s house in Shahpur for the past 10 days with her three children for her brother’s wedding.

In her complaint, the woman said she married Munaf Mehbubbhai Sheikh in 2016 as per Muslim customs, and the couple has three children aged eight, five and two years. She stated that her father-in-law had passed away around a month ago, and she had taken her husband’s permission before travelling to Shahpur on January 14 for her brother’s wedding, which was held on January 17.

The complainant alleged that on January 18, after lunch was arranged at her parental home, food was packed in tiffin boxes and sent to her mother-in-law and husband through a relative. Later that evening, around 8.15 pm, she received a phone call from her husband, during which he allegedly told her that the food sent from her side was as if “they had given to beggars” and asked her to explain the matter to her in-laws.

She further alleged that during the call, her husband abused her verbally and, when she attempted to reason with him, he told her that he would “take a decision” regarding their marriage. When she sought clarification, the complainant claimed that her husband pronounced triple talaq over the phone, leaving her frightened and distressed.

Following the incident, she informed her parents and brothers and subsequently approached the Shahpur Police Station to file a formal complaint. In her statement, she named her parents and brothers as witnesses and requested legal action against her husband.

Police officials confirmed that an application has been received and that further inquiry is under way to verify the allegations and record statements of all concerned parties.
