A lawyer was allegedly assaulted by a litigant inside a courtroom at the Metropolitan Court complex in Ahmedabad's Gheekanta area on Saturday, triggering chaos in the court premises and prompting police intervention.

The incident occurred in Court No. 15 during the hearing of a case filed under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, police sources said.

According to preliminary information, a woman from the Rakhial area had filed a case against her husband under various provisions, including those related to domestic violence. Both parties were present in court and waiting for the matter to be called for hearing.

During the proceedings, the husband allegedly became agitated after noticing his wife speaking with another young man seated nearby. Witnesses said he began arguing loudly inside the courtroom and questioned the identity of the man.

Sensing tension in the courtroom, advocate Ashok Parmar, who was representing the woman, reportedly intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. However, the husband allegedly attacked the lawyer in the presence of the presiding judge.

The unexpected incident caused panic inside the courtroom. The judge immediately left the dais and moved to chambers as a precautionary measure, sources said.

News of the alleged assault spread quickly through the court complex, drawing a large number of lawyers to Court No.15. The situation escalated further as advocates confronted the accused litigant, leading to commotion within the court premises.

The disturbance reportedly continued for more than an hour, disrupting normal functioning in parts of the court complex.

Following information about the incident, personnel from the Karanj police station rushed to the spot and escorted the accused husband away from the court premises to prevent further escalation.

Police have initiated legal action against the accused and launched an investigation into the incident.

Officials said statements of witnesses and those present in the courtroom would be recorded as part of the probe.
