A teacher and principal of a private residential academy in Ahmedabad have been booked after a 12-year-old student allegedly sustained injuries when he was beaten with a plastic stick for failing to spell a word correctly in class.

According to Isanpur Police Station, the complaint was lodged by Kiranben Kamleshbhai Hadat, a 38-year-old beauty parlour worker residing in the Memnagar area of the city.

Police said the complainant’s son, who studies in Class 8 and resides in the hostel of Isanpur Career Express Defence Academy, was allegedly assaulted by a teacher identified as Harsh Chaudhary on May 26.

The incident came to light after the woman, who had travelled to Gandhidham for work, received a phone call from an unidentified person informing her that her son had been found at Kankaria Football Ground after allegedly being beaten by a hostel teacher.

The complainant then contacted her relative, Jetharam Prajapati, and asked him to bring the child home. During questioning, the boy allegedly stated that at around 9 am on May 26, his teacher had asked him to spell the word “disease” in class. When he failed to answer correctly, the teacher allegedly struck him five to six times on his chest and right hand with a plastic stick.

Police said the child later left the hostel and was subsequently taken to LG Hospital for medical treatment. After returning to Ahmedabad from Gandhidham, the complainant allegedly noticed injury marks on her son’s chest and right hand and approached Isanpur Police Station to file a complaint.

The FIR names teacher Harsh Chaudhary and also mentions the academy principal in connection with the alleged assault.

Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the incident.
