Home Guard personnel assaulted during traffic duty in Bapunagar

Two Home Guard personnel were allegedly assaulted by four men, including one identified accused, while regulating traffic in Ahmedabad’s Bapunagar area on Tuesday night, police said.
According to a complaint registered at the Bapunagar Police Station, the incident took place near Patelwadi T junction in Bhidbhanjan Market at around 8.15 pm on May 19.
Indrajit Sendhav, 37, who has been serving as a Home Guard attached to Bapunagar police station for the past 11 years, stated that he and fellow Home Guard personnel Chetan Solanki were deployed on traffic and law-and-order duty at the junction when the incident occurred.
As per police, a man identified as Ajit Desai was allegedly riding an Activa scooter on the wrong side of the road and became involved in an argument with a rickshaw driver, leading to traffic congestion.
When the Home Guard personnel intervened and asked him to move the vehicle aside, Desai allegedly began abusing Sendhav and assaulted him by slapping and punching his face.
The complaint further alleged that another unidentified man joined Desai and assaulted Sendhav, while Desai grabbed him by the collar. Hearing the commotion, Solanki rushed to intervene, following which two more unidentified persons allegedly arrived at the spot and assaulted him as well.
According to police, one of the accused allegedly attacked Solanki with a sharp weapon, causing injuries to his back.
Sendhav stated in the complaint that he called the police emergency helpline after he and his colleague were attacked. A traffic police towing vehicle passing through the area reportedly stopped at the scene, and police personnel along with local residents intervened, preventing further assault.
The accused allegedly fled before police arrived.
Police have registered a case against Ajit Desai and three unidentified persons on charges including assault, obstruction of public duty and causing injuries.
