Chaos erupted outside the Metropolitan Court in Ahmedabad on Tuesday when a mob allegedly attacked Rohan Soni, the accused in a recent hit-and-run case near the Jhansi ni Rani BRTS in Nehrunagar area of the city.
According to police, Soni was being escorted to court when several individuals surrounded him and began assaulting him. Officers intervened quickly, pulling the accused away from the crowd and preventing further injury before producing him in court.
Two residents of Jamalpur, Akram Altaf Qureshi (22) and Ashfaq Jafar Ajmeri (35), were killed when their scooter was hit by a speeding car near the Jhansi Ki Rani statue in Nehrunagar area in the early hours of Monday.
The hit-and-run case had sparked outrage among local residents, who alleged reckless driving and demanded strict action.
Police sought five days’ remand of Soni, citing the need to probe the circumstances leading to the incident and gather evidence. However, the Metropolitan Court granted two days’ police custody.
A senior officer said, “We are investigating whether others were involved and seeking time to trace the vehicle’s movements prior to the crash.”
The accused will remain in police custody until the completion of the remand period, after which he will be produced in court again.
