Helmet drive nets ₹5.21 crore in fines across Gujarat in one month

Gujarat Police collected ₹5.21 crore in fines from 1.88 lakh two-wheeler riders during a month-long statewide helmet enforcement drive aimed at improving road safety and reducing fatalities caused by non-compliance with traffic rules.
The state Home Department launched the special drive in view of the large number of two-wheeler riders travelling without helmets, particularly outside Ahmedabad, where a lack of awareness often results in serious injuries and deaths in road accidents.
As part of the campaign, police conducted checks across the state and penalised riders found violating helmet rules. Officials said the objective of the drive was to encourage compliance with traffic regulations and enhance road safety.
The enforcement campaign was also extended to government offices, with police carrying out checks near major entry gates. During the drive, 5,123 government employees were fined for not wearing helmets, resulting in the collection of ₹19.58 lakh in penalties.
State Director General of Police G S Malik said the primary aim of Gujarat Police was not to collect fines but to ensure that citizens followed traffic rules and remained safe on the roads.
He said road safety was a shared responsibility and urged citizens to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers to prevent avoidable injuries and fatalities.
