Harni Lake tragedy: State to prepare legal framework for boating activities
The HC inquired about the supervision by Vadodara Municipal Corporation on the contracted activity, for which VMC did not have any disclosures
The state was back on yet another report on the Harni Lake boat capsizing accident, which took the lives of 17 people.
Advocate general Kamal Trivedi revealed that all the accused have been arrested, and the final report from the state magistrate has been put on record. The state has also inquired about the family members of five deceased.
The HC inquired about the supervision by Vadodara Municipal Corporation on the contracted activity, for which VMC did not have any disclosures.
During the hearing, Brijesh Trivedi, the president of the Gujarat High Court Advocates’' Association (GHAA), said that no action has been taken against the school and district education officer (DEO).
Trivedi also mentioned that mere monetary compensation for the family of the deceased would not work, and lives lost can't be monetized.
Boating activities stopped at 21 spots in state
The state inspected each water body in the state where water activities were underway after the incident. It found that 21 out of 41 were not in compliance with the rules and allowed the activities only where rules and guidelines were followed..
During the hearing, it was revealed that there is no specific law for water sports and amusement activities in Gujarat.
Trivedi said, “Taking into account the seriousness of this accident, the urban development department has formed a 13-member committee, which will prepare a legal framework, certification, rules, endorsement, etc. regarding boating and other recreational or sports activities in reservoirs.”
The government will soon make a comprehensive policy for boating and other amusement activities, including licensing for boatmen.
Recently, a Vadodara court sent two accused of the Harni boat capsizing accident after the end of their 14-day remand.
