Thriller-like scenes unfolded on the streets of Ahmedabad as two armed robbers broke into a petrol pump store in the late hours of Nov 4. The two accused were then caught in a brave pursuit by two police constables.

Petrol pump store robbed at gunpoint

Two armed robbers barged into the Shell petrol pump located at Anand Nagar’s 100-feet road in Ahmedabad at midnight.

The perpetrators attempted the robbery with a country-made firearm (tamancha) and looted the cash and mobile phones of the employees.

With the help of a few locals, the robbers, identified as Vakil and Sanjay Sahani, were caught by police.

After interrogation, the police  also tracked down the weapon supplier, Sikandar Sahani.

Cops chase with bravado

As per Bharat Patel, the store manager’s FIR, the scenes unfolded as such: at around 11.45 p.m., when Patel was auditing their revenue, a person entered, asking to buy a bottle of water.

Patel refused the purchase as the store was closed. Meanwhile, another person entered the store and robbed the counter of the ₹3,160 cash available and six mobile phones from the employees at gunpoint, then fled the scene.

They rushed to their bike, which they had parked on the other side of the road with ignition on, but as someone had removed the bike’s key, they had to run and entered a passage next to Platinum Residency hotel.

Anand Nagar police D staff constables Virendrasinh and Rajesh spotted the robbers pacing down the passage, and chased them down.

The perpetrators also tried looting a vehicle at gunpoint from two people sitting there to escape the scene. However, the man holding the gun was disarmed by Virendrasinh, who threw the baton at him, which led to the two being caught and taken to Anand Nagar police station.

The police investigation revealed Sikandar’s involvement in this case; he told the burglar duo to commit the robbery and agreed on a share amongst the three. They decided to rob, with an intention to land a hefty sum of money, but could only loot a meagre ₹3,160.

Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) SD Patel further reveals, “Both the accused don’t have a criminal record, but the weapon supplier Sikandar has an attempt to murder case registered against him. All three accused hail from Bihar and worked as daily wage labourers in Ahmedabad. Constables Virendrasinh and Rajesh will be nominated for awards for the bravery shown by them in catching the robbers.”
