Amid an LPG shortage linked to the Iran–Israel–US conflict, the Gujarat government has increased supply to the hospitality and food processing sectors following a higher allocation from the Centre.

Additional Chief Secretary of the Civil Supplies Department, Mona Khandhar, said LPG supply to the food and beverage sector has been raised by 15%.

Higher cap for hospitality sector

The state has revised the supply cap for hotels, restaurants, and the food processing industry to 25% of their requirement, up from 10%.

The decision was taken after a meeting between the state government and oil marketing companies, taking into account available supply in Gujarat.

The revised allocation will apply to fisheries, restaurants, dhabas, hotels, and corporate and industrial canteens in areas where piped natural gas (PNG) is not available. Allocation limits for other sectors remain unchanged.

Ahmedabad drive to shift consumers to PNG

In Ahmedabad, a campaign has been launched to transition more than 3.5 lakh domestic and 1,200 commercial LPG connections to PNG.

The drive is being carried out by the Civil Supplies Department, Energy and Petrochemicals Department, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, district administration, along with oil and gas companies.

Limited response to voluntary surrender

The government had earlier urged consumers with both LPG and PNG connections to voluntarily surrender LPG connections, but response remained limited.

In societies where PNG is already available, gas companies will now begin collecting applications and facilitating the surrender of LPG connections.

Over the next three months, LPG connections in such societies are set to be phased out to optimise supply during the shortage.
