Gujarat’s air quality dips sharply, state-wide AQI average touches 193

With winter setting in, Gujarat is witnessing a worrying spike in air pollution. The state’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) has climbed to 193, a level considered harmful for public health. Ahmedabad is nearing the 200 mark, making the air increasingly toxic for residents.

AQI levels above 150 are deemed dangerous, especially in industrial zones where vehicular emissions and factory pollution are the major contributors. Eight major cities in the state are now showing conditions resembling a ‘red alert’.

City-wise AQI

• Chikhli recorded the worst pollution with an AQI of 246.
• Daman followed with 224, while Rajkot hit 217.
• Ahmedabad recorded 196
• Ankleshwar crossed 164, and Bhavnagar reported an AQI of 156.

Health impact

Doctors warn that poor air quality triggers respiratory issues, eye irritation and breathlessness, especially among children, senior citizens and asthma patients. Morning walkers and commuters have reported increased discomfort due to smog-like conditions.

Avoid travelling through high-pollution zones; use a mask if required.

Asthma patients must carry inhalers and essential medication at all times.
