Gujarat’s 38 MLA’s celebrate their birthday on June 1, coincidence?

In administrative circles of Gujarat, June 1 comes up as a date of birth more frequently than one would imagine. In fact,  38 MLAs of the state celebrate their birthday on June 1. 

According to official records, 47 MLAs in Gujarat were born in the month of June, with 38 of them sharing June 1 as their recorded birthdate. That means nearly 20% of the state’s 182 MLAs are blowing out candles today—a statistical oddity that cannot be easily dismissed.

Why this phenomena?

In earlier decades, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas, birth registration was often overlooked due to limited awareness, lower literacy rates, and inadequate access to official systems. When these children later entered school—where a birthdate was a required field—June 1 was frequently used as a default date. It conveniently aligned with the start of the academic year and ensured smooth enrollment.
