Crimes against women and grievances have seen more than 1,300 complaints being filed in  2024-25, the Gujarat State Women Commission reported.

The Commission’s annual report for 2024–25 mentions receiving 1,338 applications between April 2024 and March 2025.

The complaints covered issues, including physical and mental harassment, sexual harassment, dowry demands, dowry-related deaths, rape, marital disputes, kidnapping and relating to employment.

Additionally, 703 cases were pending from April 2024 to March 2025. Of the total 2,041 cases before the commission during the year, 991 were disposed of, while 1,050 are under process.

Apart from this, women’s courts across Gujarat handled around 3,800 applications during the year. These courts aim to provide women with an opportunity to resolve disputes through conciliation without resorting to formal judicial proceedings.

Matters addressed in women’s courts include domestic violence, marital disputes, harassment by alcoholic husbands, property and land conflicts, disputes over women’s assets and child custody issues.

The commission has also been operating an NRI Cell since August 2008 to address grievances of women facing difficulties after marrying and moving abroad.

In cases where NRI men allegedly abandon their wives or fail to fulfil marital responsibilities, the cell facilitates action, including recommendations for proceedings under relevant international arrangements such as Interpol mechanisms, officials said.
