Gujarat Water Security Boosted: Sardar Sarovar Level Soars Past 95% After Fresh Spell of Rain

The state’s crucial lifeline, the Sardar Sarovar Dam, has witnessed a remarkable surge in its water storage level, reaching 95.16 per cent of its full capacity following a fresh bout of widespread rainfall across Gujarat. The massive influx of water—a jump of nearly five percentage points in just a single week—offers immense relief for the state’s agricultural sector and guarantees drinking water security for millions.

Across Gujarat, the cumulative storage across 206 major and minor reservoirs now stands at 375,330 million cubic feet, amounting to 67.28 per cent of total capacity. Official figures reveal that the state’s water bodies currently hold approximately 2.832 crore litres, providing a substantial buffer as the monsoon season progresses.

35 Reservoirs Placed on High Alert Across Districts

The rapid rise in water levels has prompted state authorities to place 35 dams on high alert, as their individual capacities have breached the 90 per cent mark. Out of the 206 tracked reservoirs, 21 are now brimming at 100 per cent capacity, while 38 sit between 70 and 100 per cent capacity.

A further 25 dams hold between 50 and 70 per cent storage, and 43 operate between 25 and 50 per cent. However, uneven rainfall patterns mean that 79 reservoirs—primarily situated in drier pockets—remain below 25 per cent capacity.

South Gujarat Leads In Storage, Kutch Lags Behind

Regional variations across the state remain stark. South Gujarat has logged the highest regional reservoir level at 80.91 per cent, driven by heavy spells over the past fortnight. Central Gujarat follows with a comfortable 62.87 per cent storage capacity.

Conversely, Saurashtra sits at 48.56 per cent, while North Gujarat’s dams are filled to 42.19 per cent capacity. The arid district of Kutch recorded the lowest storage levels in the state, standing at just 22.98 per cent.
