As students of doctor of philosophy (PhD) in Gujarat Vidyapith await the state’s nod to include the university in the SHODH scholarship scheme, the newly appointed vice-chancellor, Dr Harshad Patel, requested the same from the state.
The university founded by Mahatma Gandhi is yet to be included in the list of state universities providing PhD scholarships.
In 2019, the education department announced ScHeme Of Developing High quality research (SHODH) for students studying at state universities who can apply for PhD courses.
After the applications are received, a committee scrutinises them using various criteria.
Based on merit and standards, a fixed number of students are awarded the scholarship.
Despite being a state university, Gujarat Vidyapith has not been added to the list of 60 universities getting the scholarship.
Why is Gujarat Vidyapith not included in SHODH?
Earlier, Gujarat Vidyapith made written applications to the government on this issue, which did not fetch any results.
Since Gujarat Vidyapith is a deemed university under the central government, its students receive scholarships under various central government schemes.
Therefore, the students are not provided the benefit of the Gujarat government’s research scholarship scheme.
However, this scheme also benefits students of national universities, including Raksha Shakti University and Forensic Science University, according to reports.
The newly appointed vice chancellor, Dr Patel, has requested to include poor and middle-class PhD students of the university in this research scholarship scheme.
A formal proposal regarding this will also be made by the university to the government office. Gujarat Vidyapith hosts around 50 PhD students every year.
Why is the SHODH scholarship important?
The Gujarat government promotes quality research in higher education through the SHODH scheme.
The scheme provides a monthly stipend of ₹15,000 and ₹20,000 annually for incidental expenses over two years. Additionally, researchers receive ₹2 lakh per year and ₹4 lakh at the end of two years.
