Gujarat University

In light of the recent unrest incident that took place at Gujarat University, the vice chancellor, Dr Neerja Gupta, has said that the university has instructed students not to engage in any religious or cultural activities in public that may hurt anyone’s religious or social sentiments.

The controversy erupted after foreign students were seen offering prayers in public at the university’s hostel.

“We have issued instructions to the students that they should not do anything in public that may hurt or offend anyone,” said Dr Gupta.

“If the students living in the hostel do not have the permission or consent of all, they should not do any such religious or cultural activity or celebration in public that may spoil the atmosphere and cause harm to anyone,” she added.

The VC said that the university has issued rules for foreign students living in the NRI (non-resident Indians) hostel and has instructed for strict implementation of the same.

“The rules have also been put up on the website. They will have to issue an undertaking accepting these rules,” she said.

According to the rules, foreign students will not be able to organise any function or celebration without the prior permission of the warden.

It is important to note that the university has currently only issued rules for foreign students.
