Gujarat University sees 40% decline in verification of certificates by students going abroad

The number of students from Gujarat heading abroad for higher studies has seen a sharp 40% decline, with the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and Australia witnessing fewer applicants from the state.
Data from Gujarat University shows that between April 2022 and March 2023, a total of 14,864 students applied for mark sheet and degree verification along with transcripts, which are mandatory for overseas universities.
The figure rose to 18,237 between April 2023 and March 2024. However, the number fell drastically to 11,071 between April 2024 and March 2025 — a drop of around 40% compared to the previous year.
From April to August 2025, only 4,066 applications for verification of certificates were filed at Gujarat University. Officials note that changes and tightening of student visa rules in the US and Canada in recent years have had a visible impact on the outflow of students.
The figures reflect only the situation at Gujarat University, the state’s oldest and largest, but sources say that data from GTU and other state universities could provide an even clearer picture of the decline in students seeking higher education abroad.
