Gujarat University declares every Monday as ‘No Vehicle Day’ to cut fuel use, pollution

In a major step towards environmental sustainability, Gujarat University has announced every Monday as a ‘No Vehicle Day’ across its campus. The university administration issued a circular in this regard. The decision will come into effect from the upcoming Monday until further notice.
The acting registrar’s directive will apply to all university departments as well as affiliated colleges. Both teaching and non-teaching staff members have been instructed not to use their private vehicles on Mondays. The initiative aims to reduce pollution levels on campus and lower the university’s overall carbon footprint.
The move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to reduce excessive consumption of petrol and diesel. Earlier, the university had also introduced a carpooling initiative, encouraging employees travelling from similar areas to share vehicles in an effort to reduce traffic congestion and environmental impact.
University authorities have reportedly informed all affiliated institutions about the latest directive. Principals, heads of departments, and directors of faculties and campus buildings have been instructed to ensure strict implementation of the rule.
However, despite previous appeals and circulars promoting carpooling, compliance among some staff members reportedly remained limited. Several senior officials and professors were still seen travelling alone in their personal vehicles, raising concerns over the effectiveness of voluntary measures.
The university administration now hopes that the introduction of ‘No Vehicle Day’ will encourage greater responsibility among staff members and strengthen environmental conservation efforts on campus. It is believed that consistent enforcement of such initiatives can significantly reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable practices within the university community.
