Gujarat University allows jobs, CA–CS training as ‘internships’ for UG students

In a major relief for undergraduate students, Gujarat University has announced that on-the-job experience and professional courses like CA (Chartered Accountant), CS (Company Secretary), and CMA (Cost and Management Accountant) will now be counted as valid internships for students entering the sixth semester.

The decision was finalised today during a meeting of principals convened to streamline mandatory internships under the New Education Policy (NEP). Over 40,000 students across BA, BCom and BSc programmes will be covered under the new guidelines.

Students who are working alongside their studies can claim internship credits if their company issues a certificate detailing subject-relevant work.

BCom students pursuing professional courses such as CA, CS or CMA will get their mandatory training recognised as internship work — a major relief in the first year of NEP-based implementation.

Psychology students: 700+ to be placed at a major city hospital.

Outstation students: may complete internships in schools, NGOs, or through survey-based projects.

Family businesses like beauty parlours, garages or shops will also be recognised, subject to certification.

Credit structure

  • 120 hours: 4 credits
  • 90 hours: 3 credits
  • 60 hours: 2 credits (minimum two credits mandatory)

The university has also reached out to the Municipal Corporation and GIDC to facilitate placements as the sixth semester begins on December 4.
