Gujarat tops the list of having the highest custodial deaths in India
Maharashtra comes a close second while Madhya Pradesh is at third position

In the last five years, there have been a total of 81 custodial deaths in Gujarat, which is the highest among all the states in India, Lok Sabha was informed on Aug 1.
Union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai said as many as 687 people died in police custody in various parts of the country from Apr 1, 2018 to Mar 31, 2023.
10-15% of custodial deaths of India happens in Gujarat
24 prisoners have died of suicide in the last three years. In 2018-19, 13 custodial deaths happened in Gujarat, which was 12 in 2019-20, 17 in 2020-21, 24 in 2021-22, and 15 in 2022–23.
The recent report released in Lok Sabha’s monsoon session states that the number of custodial deaths has seen an increase all over India, with Gujarat’s average standing between 10% and 15%.

Maharashtra is at second place with 80, while Madhya Pradesh is third with 50 custodial deaths in the last five years. Bihar stands fourth with 47 custodial deaths.
70 custodial deaths in Gujarat in population of one crore
In India, a total of 687 custodial deaths have occurred in the last five years.
85 custodial deaths occur for every one crore of the population in India. Whereas an average of 70 custodial deaths occur in Gujarat for every one crore of the population.
