In a major relief for farmers across Gujarat, the state government has decided to release irrigation water from the Narmada canal network from June 11, 2026, earlier than the usual schedule. The decision is expected to benefit thousands of farmers preparing their fields for the upcoming Kharif cropping (rice, corn, jowar, bajra, and ragi) season.

The decision was taken after several local MLAs and MPs from the Narmada Canal Command area requested the government to provide water earlier. They informed the government that farmers were getting ready for sowing and needed timely irrigation support to begin agricultural activities without delay.

A high level review meeting was held under the chairmanship of the CM. Senior officials of the Narmada project and concerned departments attended the meeting and assessed the current water availability in the Sardar Sarovar reservoir and the canal system.

The state government has directed officials to ensure smooth and planned distribution of water across the canal system. Necessary guidelines have been issued to canal authorities and irrigation departments to keep all arrangements ready before the release begins. Officials have been asked to monitor the water supply closely so that farmers in different regions receive water on time.

The early release of canal water is expected to help farmers prepare their land, complete sowing activities, and reduce dependence on uncertain rainfall during the initial phase of the monsoon season.

The state said that the decision reflects its commitment to supporting the farming community and ensuring that agricultural activities continue smoothly during the Kharif season. The administration will continue to monitor water availability and make necessary arrangements to meet the needs of farmers across the state.
