To boost tourism and develop emergency medical services, the state government is planning to build eight airstrips in the state. The obstacle limit surfaces (OLS) surveys for the same have been started. The government announced the setting up of 13 airstrips in 2019 at a cost of ₹93.74 cr.
The project was announced for Ambaji, Dholavira, Parsoli (Navsari), Rajpipla, Mandvi, Morbi, Dahej, Palitana, Ankleshwar, Vanod (Becharaji), Bagodara, and Rajkot.
Recently, PM Narendra Modi inaugurated Rajkot’s Hirasar international airport. Airstrips at Mehsana, Amreli, and Mandvi are already operational airfields of the government.
GUJSAIL braces up to built airstrips
Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Ltd (GUJSAIL), has started the process of acquiring land and finalising OLS surveys for eight airstrips. Tenders have been issued to agencies that are recognised by the airport authority.
Lands have been allocated by the district administrations for the construction of airstrips at these eight venues.
OLS surveys at the previously declared airstrips of Mehsana, Amreli, and Mandvi, and five new airstrips, Ankleshwar, Rajpipla, Rajula, Dhordo (Kutch), and Dahod, have started.
Currently, the state has a total of 19 airstrips. After the OLS survey, five new ones will also be added to the list.
What is an OLS survey?
The obstacle limitation surfaces survey is conducted to identify the significant objects in and around the 20 km radius centred on the airstrip. The results of the OLS surveys will be submitted to the airport authority.
