Gujarat surpasses Maha’s relative per capita income, but there’s a twist
In a recent report released by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), Maharashtra and Gujarat have been leading contributors to the country’s GDP growth.
The EAC-PM released a paper titled ‘Relative Economic Performance of Indian States: 1960-61 to 2023-24’ of September 2024 edition authored by Sanjeev Sanyal and Akanksha Arora.
“Maharashtra and Gujarat have consistently performed well throughout the study period. Maharashtra has maintained the highest share of India’s GDP for almost all of the period. Gujarat’s share remained at broadly the same levels until 2000-01, before beginning to increase rapidly – from 6.4% in 2000-01 to 8.1% in 2022-23,” as per the study.
However, Maharashtra’s growth has faltered for the first time in a decade, while Gujarat has surpassed it, according to the study.
Maharashtra’s contribution to India’s GDP decreased by 2.1% over the last decade, while Gujarat’s GDP contribution increased from 7.5% in 2010-11 to 8.1% in 2023-24.
Gujarat lagged behind Maharashtra, with a relative per capita income of 118.3% compared to Maharashtra’s 133.7 % in 1960-61. This disparity persisted until 2010-11, when Gujarat surpassed Maharashtra. By 2023-24, Gujarat’s per capita income rose to 160.7% of national average, as compared to 150% for Maharashtra.
But, here’s the catch — while the statistics of all the states in the study is till 2023-24, that of Gujarat is presented till 2022-23.
