Gujarat slips in NIRF 2025 rankings, IIT-Gn only institute in overall top 100

The Government of India on Thursday released the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025, where Gujarat’s performance has slipped in the overall category. Last year, Gujarat University and IIT Gandhinagar both figured in the country’s top 100 institutions overall, but this year, IIT Gandhinagar is the only institute from the state on the list — and its rank has dropped from 29 to 39.
In the university category, however, Gujarat University has improved its position, climbing from 76th to 74th nationally. Among state universities, it now ranks 25th, up from 29th last year. GTU, meanwhile, failed to make it to the top 100 overall or in the university category, but saw progress in the pharmacy category, moving up from 70th to 58th.
IIM Ahmedabad has once again secured the top spot in the management category, while GNLU ranks fifth in law. Despite this, Gujarat continues to lag behind in several key segments. For the second consecutive year, no Gujarat-based college has found a place among the top 100 colleges nationally.
This year’s rankings cover 15 categories, and while Gujarat has over 100 universities and 3,000+ colleges, experts point out that many institutions either don’t apply for NIRF assessment or lack the required performance benchmarks, resulting in the state’s declining representation.
