Gujarat SIR: Over 24 lakh names deleted from voter list

The State Election Commission (SEC) in Gujarat is working full throttle as the finalisation of the voter list enters its last phase.

Before the publication of the draft electoral roll on December 4, names of 24.23 lakh voters have already been deleted across the state, triggering urgency and confusion among citizens.

The ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) has led to widespread rush and anxiety among voters, who are now scrambling to submit forms—many directly at polling stations.

According to the SEC, 1,00,047 deceased voters have been removed, while 1.42 lakh voters whose addresses could not be verified or who have moved abroad have been deleted. Moreover, 10.95 lakh voters who shifted from one constituency to another have been removed from their old locations.

Around 1.39 lakh voters whose names appeared in more than one constituency have also been identified and deleted.

However, due to inadequate awareness campaigns, many citizens, especially migrant workers who moved to Gujarat for employment, remain confused about the process and fear wrongful deletions.

The SEC stated that 74% of the revision work has been completed across Gujarat and the remaining tasks will be finished before December 4.
