Gujarat sees sharp increase in cancer fatalities in women

In Gujarat, over the past five years, 28,768 women have died from cancer, including 20,317 from breast cancer and 8,451 from uterine cancer. This means that, on average, 16 women lose their lives every day in Gujarat from either breast or uterine cancer.

According to recent data from the health department of the state, the incidence of breast cancer among women in Gujarat has been steadily increasing. In 2014, 3,355 women died from breast cancer; 3,450 in 2015;  3,547in 2016;, and 3,647 in 2017.

This represents a nearly 30% increase in deaths from breast cancer between 2014 and 2023.

Nationwide, the number of women dying from breast cancer increased from 78,387 in 2021 to 80,390 in 2022; and to 82,429 in 2023. For uterine cancer, Tamil Nadu leads with the highest number of deaths in 2023, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, with Gujarat ranking 9th.

In Gujarat, uterine cancer cases numbered 1,293 in 2014; 1,434 in 2015; 1,474 in 2016; 1,515 in 2017; and 1,557 in 2018. This represents a 30% increase in uterine cancer cases from 2014 to 2023. Nationwide, deaths from uterine cancer have risen from 33,938 in 2021 to 34,809 in 2022; and to 35,691 in 2023, totaling over 1,04,000 women over three years.
