Gujarat sees over 5,400 emergencies on Diwali day, 12% increase compared to normal days: EMRI report

Diwali celebrations in Gujarat were marred by a significant spike in emergencies, with the Emergency Ambulance Service, GVK-EMRI, reporting a total of 5,406 cases on the festival day in the state, a 12.04% increase compared to 4,285 emergencies recorded on normal days of 2025.
The data highlights a particularly alarming 73.75% surge in road accident-related emergencies, with 919 cases reported this Diwali compared to 529 in normal days. Surat district bore the brunt of the road accident crisis, registering 105 cases. Ahmedabad followed closely with 104 cases, while Dahod reported 54, Rajkot 51, and Vadodara 50 road accident emergencies.
Physical assault cases also saw a staggering rise, with a 144.58% increase compared to normal days of the year. Ahmedabad district led with 79 assault-related emergencies, followed by Surat (59), Dahod (29), and Kutch (20).
Burn injuries, often linked to firecracker mishaps, were another concern, with Ahmedabad district reporting 17 of the state’s 58 burn cases. Surat recorded 8 burn emergencies, and Jamnagar saw 5.
Non-vehicular trauma emergencies totalled 862, including 391 physical assault cases, 291 falls or skids, 16 electrocution incidents, and 29 crush injuries. Other emergencies included 380 cases of breathing difficulties, 570 abdominal pain complaints, 267 cardiac arrests, 192 fever cases, 147 poisoning incidents, and 33 stroke-related emergencies.
