Gujarat sees 22 lakh new diabetes cases in one year, highest in India

Gujarat is witnessing an alarming rise in lifestyle-related diseases. In a single year, 22.18 lakh people were diagnosed wit h diabetes and 77,000 with cancer, according to data presented in the Rajya Sabha.

Over three years, 5.95 crore screenings were carried out, with 47.66 lakh individuals detected with diabetes—a 14% rise compared to earlier periods.

Gujarat recorded the highest number of newly diagnosed diabetes cases in 2025–26 among all Indian states.

Diabetes cases 2025-26:

NFHS-5 data shows that 16% of men and 14.8% of women above 15 years in the state have high or very high blood sugar levels, with prevalence significantly higher in urban areas.

In cancer cases, Uttar Pradesh tops the list, while Gujarat ranks 8th with over 77,000 cases reported in 2024.
