Gujarat second in country with most number of pollution complaints; 189 companies flagged by CPCB in 3 years

Amid the rapid industrialisation in the state,189 industries have received notices from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) for causing pollution over the past three years.
Gujarat ranks second among the states in the country with the highest number of complaints. The CPCB received 35 complaints against Gujarat industries in 2021-22, 86 in 2022-23, and 68 in 2023-24.
In 2023-24, Uttar Pradesh topped the states with 87 complaints, followed by Gujarat with 68, Maharashtra with 61, Delhi with 56, and West Bengal with 38 complaints.
In total, the CPCB received complaints against 688 industries from across the country in 2023-24. In 2022-23, 10 complaints against agro-based industries in Gujarat were reported, including 6 against textile, 3 against paper, and 1 against the sugar industry.
In 2023-24, 6 complaints were related to the textile industry. Overall, 8 complaints were received against agro-based industries in 2023-24, 7 of which were from the textile sector. Over the past three years, complaints against polluting industries have doubled, with 35 complaints in 2021-22 increasing to 68.
Across the nation, there were 417 complaints in 2021-22, 746 in 2022-23, and 688 in 2023-24. Many industries not only pollute the air, but also discharge their industrial waste into rivers, causing water pollution. It is necessary to take strict action, not just fines, against such polluting industries.
