Gujarat schools fail to form parent committees, no parent candidate yet for GSHSEB poll

Updated: Aug 21st, 2024

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board is set to hold elections for nine positions on September 24, including one seat reserved for a representative of parent committees. Despite this provision, the current picture reveals a significant gap in adequate representation of parent committees. Unlike teacher, principal, and administrative staff committees, parent committees are not adequately represented , and many schools do not even have a parent committee.

Nomination forms for the upcoming elections are now available. Key elections include positions for the management committee and the principal committee. The board aims to include representatives from across the education sector – principals, teachers, school managers, and administrative staff as well as parents of the students.

This inclusion is intended to address parent concerns regarding educational issues at the board level. Historically, parent committee representatives have often been chosen among school managers, rather than from independent parent committees.

There has been criticism over schools not complying with regulations for formation of parent committees. Schools are mandated to create a parent association, however, there have been no parent candidates to the board so far.

This situation underscores the need for improved implementation and awareness of the role of parent committees within the educational framework.
