Gujarat saw 33% surge in violent crimes in 2024: NCRB report

Gujarat witnessed a significant 33 percent increase in violent crimes in 2024, with the state recording 11,967 cases compared to 8,976 in 2023, according to the latest Crime in India report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The two major cities of Ahmedabad and Surat together accounted for 26% of the state's total violent crimes, registering a combined 3,138 cases. Ahmedabad saw a steep 61% rise, with violent crime cases jumping from 1,269 in 2023 to 2,051 in 2024. Surat also reported a notable increase, recording 1,087 cases against 675 the previous year.
Ahmedabad and Surat account for over a quarter of the state's violent crime cases amid sharp urban spikes.
In Ahmedabad, authorities recorded 90 murder cases, 62 rape cases, 1,385 cases of hurt or grievous hurt, and 206 cases of kidnapping and abduction during 2024. Surat reported even higher numbers in certain categories, with 114 murders, 85 rapes, 490 cases of hurt or grievous hurt, and 263 kidnapping or abduction cases.
At the state level, Gujarat registered 661 rape cases, 964 murders, 839 attempts to murder, and 170 cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The report also documented 6,968 cases of hurt or grievous hurt, 1,247 kidnapping and abduction incidents, 265 rioting cases, 499 robberies, 96 dacoities, and 185 cases of arson.
The surge in Gujarat mirrors a worrying national trend. Violent crimes across India rose by approximately 70%, escalating from 4.34 lakh cases in 2023 to 7.42 lakh cases in 2024, as per the NCRB data.
