Gujarat saw 20% rise in child adoptions, 1,287 children adopted in 10 years

Adoption of children in Gujarat has seen a significant rise in the last 5 years. As many as 1,287 children were adopted from the state in the last 10 financial years between 2015-16 to 2024-25. The highest adoption of 156 children in the last 5 years was seen in FY 2024-25. Among them, 69 were boys and 87 were girls.

A rise of almost 20% in child adoption from Gujarat was seen in 2024-25, compared to 2023-24. According to the data of the Central Resource Authority (CARA) under the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2024-25, 142 children were adopted by people within the country. Similarly during the same period, 14 children were adopted in different foreign countries from the state.

The adoptions in 2024-25, are second highest for the state, after 2018-19, during which 174 children were adopted from the state. In the last financial year, 69 boys and 87 girls were adopted, while in the previous financial year, 59 boys and 66 girls were adopted.

Regarding data from across the country for FY 2024-25, 849 children were adopted from Maharashtra, followed by 465 in Tamil Nadu, 328 from West Bengal and 306 from Karnataka. Gujarat ranks 12th compared to other states in the country.

Overall, India saw a hike of 10.74% in child adoption in FY 2024-25. Total 4,515 children were adopted compared to 4,029 in the previous financial year in the country. As many as 4,155 kids were adopted within the country, whereas 360 were adopted by people living in other countries. Of these, 1,966 boys and 2,554 girls.
