Gujarat safe for women? 331 harassment cases tell a different story

The model state “Gujarat” claims to be a safe state for women, but it is under fresh scrutiny after official crime data revealed that 331 cases of molestation and sexual harassment were registered in 2024 alone. One girl or woman fell victim to such offences every day, raising concerns over the safety of minors and women in public spaces, workplaces, and transport systems, the report suggests.
The official crime data records show a total of 331 cases of molestation and sexual harassment were registered across Gujarat during 2024.
The figures suggest that, on average, nearly one case of sexual harassment was reported every day, with minors accounting for a significant proportion of victims.
Despite repeated claims regarding women's safety in the state, activists and observers argue that incidents of harassment continue to occur across a wide range of locations, from public spaces and workplaces to educational institutions and transport services.
Despite police patrolling in busy urban areas, at least 17 molestation cases were reported from public places, including markets and especially areas with daily public movement.
Workplaces have also emerged as locations of concern. Official records indicate that 7 cases of sexual harassment were reported from offices during the year 2024, despite growing awareness and legal safeguards aimed at protecting women employees.
In addition, 43 cases were reported from commercial establishments and work-related environments, including malls, factories and other workplaces frequented by women seeking employment or carrying out daily activities.
Concerns have also been raised about the safety of women using public transport services. Social activists note that incidents of harassment in buses, trains and other public transport systems continue to be reported, underscoring the need for stronger surveillance and enforcement mechanisms.
Child rights advocates have expressed particular concern over the vulnerability of minors, warning that increasing incidents involving girls under the age of 18 point to the need for greater awareness, preventive measures, and swift legal action against offenders.
Law enforcement agencies maintain that action is taken in accordance with the law whenever complaints are received and that initiatives aimed at improving women's safety are being implemented across the state.
