Gujarat reports 3,600 accidental injuries in Diwali, 700% spike in burn cases

The vibrant festival of lights brought a dark outcome for many, as 3,625 injuries were reported in the accidents that occurred during the four days of Diwali celebrations in Gujarat.

The state reported a spike of 91.48% in the average daily injuries in accidents from October 31 to November 3.

As per the numbers provided by the ‘108’ EMRI Emergency Services, Gujarat registered injuries caused by 2,821 two-wheeler accidents, 396 four-wheeler accidents, 200 auto-rickshaw accidents, and 183 other accidents.

The average two-wheeler accidents reported daily saw a mammoth spike, as the number, which usually stands at 395, shot up by 93% during the Diwali days.

Moreover, the average daily injuries have escalated from 481 to 906 in the state during these days. This translates to 38 injuries registered hourly.

Emergencies caused by burn cases soared as high as 706%. The daily average of 4 cases on general days was reported to be 38 on October 31, 40 on November 1, 24 on November 2, and 11 on November 3.

Of the total 113 cases, Ahmedabad registered 33, Surat 29, Rajkot 8, Bharuch 7, Kutch 5, Vadodara 4, Patan 4, and Jamnagar 3.

Injuries caused in violent brawls also shot up by 124% as compared to the daily average of 144 cases. The state registered 323 cases on October 31, 381 on November 1, 284 on November 2, and 209 on November 3.

Notably, emergencies related to breathing remained stagnant during this Diwali, as numbers circled around the daily average of 412.
