No need to panic, but be alert: Gujarat govt on 36 cases of JN.1 variant

22 patients with the JN.1 variant have recovered and 14 are undergoing treatment

Updated: Dec 29th, 2023

Acknowledging the number of JN.1 cases announced by the union health ministry, the Gujarat government has admitted that 36 cases of rapidly spreading JN.1 variant of COVID-19 have been reported in Gujarat. State spokesperson Rushikesh Patel revealed the numbers on Dec 28, addressing a press conference.

Out of 36 cases of the JN.1 variant in the state, 22 patients have recovered and 14 are undergoing treatment in home isolation, according to Patel.

Patel stated that from Dec 1-27, a total of 8,426 COVID-19 tests were conducted, out of which 99 turned out to be positive.

Currently, the number of active cases in the state is 66 and two patients are under treatment in hospital.

Patel said that people do not need to panic or worry about the JN.1 variant but it is necessary to be alert. As of Dec 28, there are 47 active cases in Ahmedabad, 10 in Rajkot, 4 in Gandhinagar, and one each in Dahod, Gir Somnath, Kutch, Morbi, and Sabarkantha.

The genome sequencing report of the positive cases was received on Dec 27, which revealed the 36 cases of the JN.1 variant.

None of the patients positive for the JN.1 variant required hospitalisation.

According to Patel, the current average positivity rate is 0.86%, a low rate, however, people, especially patients with comorbidities need to be vigilant. Since every positive case in Gujarat had genome sequencing done, even with a low number of cases, the cases of the JN.1 variant have turned out to be higher.

Ahmedabad adds to the tally

10 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in eight wards of the city in 24 hours. Among the newly reported cases, four patients have a travel history to Rajkot, Goa, Singapore, and Australia.

For the JN.1 variant, Ahmedabad has registered 20 cases till now, and all of them have been cured, according to Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).

The city’s new cases came from Naranpura, Bodakdev, Thaltej, Nikol, Maninagar, Sabarmati, Navarangpura, and Isanpur wards.

Ahmedabad currently has 46 active COVID-19 cases, out of which 45 patients are under home isolation, whereas one is hospitalised.

Arrangements have been made for Rapid Antigen Tests in all Urban Health Centers of the city.
