GUJARAT RED ALERT UPADATE @NOON: 8 Inches in 6 Hours: Cloudburst-Like Rains Hammer Gujarat, Umarpada Worst Hit

A ferocious spell of monsoon rain ripped through South and Central Gujarat on Friday morning, dumping nearly eight inches of water in a matter of hours and leaving major towns struggling against rapid inundation.

Official data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar reveals that 115 talukas recorded rainfall between 6:00 AM and 12:00 PM. Out of these, 15 locations were battered by torrential downpours exceeding 100 mm (4 inches) within the brief six-hour window, forcing disaster response authorities into high gear.

Umarpada Takes the Heaviest Blow

Surat district’s Umarpada taluka ended up right in the crosshairs of the deluge, registering a staggering 203 mm (7.99 inches) of rainfall by midday. The weather system intensified steadily as the morning progressed, pounding the area with 85 mm of rain between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, followed by another unrelenting 87 mm spell over the next two hours.

Central Gujarat witnessed similarly aggressive storm activity, with districts like Kheda and Anand enduring cloudburst-like conditions. Vaso in Kheda logged 162 mm (6.38 inches) of rain. Alarmingly, 124 mm of that total crashed down in a single two-hour outburst between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, paralyzing local traffic and submerging roads. Surrounding pockets including Borsad (159 mm), Nadiad (151 mm), and Khambhat (147 mm) were hit by successive heavy rain bands shortly after.

Early Morning Surge Floods Narmada

The cloud systems initially made landfall further east across the Narmada district at the break of dawn. Between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM, both Sagbara and Garudeshwar bore the brunt of a severe opening wave, catching 118 mm of rain in just 120 minutes. As the weather system drifted west toward the coastal belt, Tilakwada (118 mm) and Nandod (117 mm) were left dealing with severe localized waterlogging.
