Gujarat Records Over 79,000 Cancer Cases, 43,500 Deaths in a Year

Gujarat reported over 79,000 new cancer cases and more than 43,500 deaths in 2025, reflecting a nearly 10% increase in both incidence and mortality compared to 2021, according to official data.

The figures indicate that the state is witnessing an average of 217 new cancer cases and 119 cancer-related deaths every day, underlining the growing burden of the disease.

Cases and Deaths Rise Since 2021

In 2021, Gujarat recorded 71,507 cancer cases and 39,238 deaths. By 2025, the number of cases had increased to around 79,000, while deaths crossed 43,500.

Based on the 2025 data, Gujarat ranks ninth among Indian states in terms of cancer-related deaths. Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of deaths, with over 1.25 lakh fatalities.

Oral Cancer Tops Among Men, Breast Cancer Among Women

Data from the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute (GCRI) at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital's medical campus shows that oral cancer remained the most common cancer among men, with 1,931 cases reported in 2025, up from 1,726 cases in 2021.

Among women, breast cancer continued to be the most common, with 1,456 cases recorded in 2025 compared to 1,385 cases in 2021.

Ahmedabad Cancer Hospital Treats Patients From Across India

The cancer hospital at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital registered more than 26,810 new patients in 2025 (up to November).

Apart from patients from Gujarat, the hospital also treated a significant number from neighbouring states. The highest number came from Madhya Pradesh (4,572), followed by Rajasthan (2,678), Uttar Pradesh (1,094), Bihar (288) and Maharashtra (279), highlighting the hospital's role as a regional cancer treatment centre.
