Gujarat records highest power consumption, averaging 36 cr units daily

Gujarat has witnessed a steady rise in electricity consumption, emerging as one of the country’s highest power consumers, driven largely by industrial demand. During 2024–25, total electricity consumption in the state stood at 1.34 crore million units.
On average, Gujarat consumes approximately 36.75 crore units of electricity daily, equivalent to nearly 1.53 crore units per hour. This results in a continuous load of around 15,000 megawatts on the power system.
Official data indicates that electricity consumption in the state has increased by nearly 10 per cent over the past year, with the average daily load on the system now exceeding 15,000 megawatts.

In 2024–25, domestic consumers accounted for about 19,580 million units of electricity consumption, while the commercial and industrial sector consumed 88,723 million units. Agricultural usage stood at 22,366 million units, and other categories accounted for 3,470 million units.
By comparison, Gujarat consumed 1,21,571 million units in 2023–24, reflecting a significant year-on-year increase. The number of electricity consumers rose from 2.02 crore in 2023–24 to 2.16 crore in 2024–25.

Since 2011–12, the state has discontinued a separate category for commercial electricity consumption, with such usage now included under broader classifications.

In Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar, there are around 15.57 lakh electricity consumers. Out of which, approximately 13.44 lakh are supplied by government-run electricity distribution companies, while about 2.12 lakh consumers are connected to private power companies.
