Gujarat records highest number of custodial deaths for the third consecutive year, reports NCRB

During the past year, Gujarat, which has been lauded for its safety, witnessed considerable, according to the latest report by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
As per the 2022 report, the state witnesses 959 murders, 13,000 cases of theft, 610 cases of rape, and 1,846 cases of kidnapping.
Notably, the statistics of the NCRB state that Gujarat has been ranked second in the country for the murder of children under the age of six.
According to the NCRB data, Maharashtra registered 60 murders of children below the age of six, while in Gujarat it was 45.
For the third consecutive year, Gujarat topped the list in terms of cases of custodial deaths. 14 out of 75 custodial deaths in India were in Gujarat. The data reportedly depicted that while eight people died by suicide, five died during treatment, and one person died while attempting to escape police custody.

While 8,789 cases of suicide were reported in Gujarat in 2021, it spiked with 9,002 cases in 2022. Out of the reported suicides, 6,258 were men, 2,742 were women and two were transgenders.

The state witnessed a considerable number of cases of missing people. In 2022, a total of 14,119 people went missing. Notably, 10,606 women went missing last year.
A total of 5,370 men went missing in Gujarat, out of whom 1,232 were from Ahmedabad and 1,119 from Surat.
The two cities of Ahmedabad and Surat witnessed the maximum number of cases where people went missing.
Liquor-related offences
It is to be noted that in the ‘dry-state’ of Gujarat, under the Gujarat Prohibition Act, 3.10 lakh incidents were reported in 2022. The number of incidents were 2.83 lakh in 2021.
The state sees the highest crime rate when it comes to Prohibition Law among all provisions of law enumerated under NCRB reports.
