Gujarat ranks third in car sales as registrations cross 5.8 lakh in five months

Gujarat ranked third among Indian states in car sales during the first five months of the year, with more than 192,000 cars sold and nearly 580,000 vehicles registered. The figures translate to an average of about 1,600 cars sold every day.
Only Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra recorded higher car sales during the period.
Gujarat among top states for vehicle registrations
For overall vehicle registrations, Uttar Pradesh topped the country, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat.
Within Gujarat, Surat recorded the highest number of registrations, followed by Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara and Ahmedabad East. Surat also led the state’s regional transport offices (RTOs), ahead of Ahmedabad and Rajkot.
The state’s vehicle population has grown steadily in recent years. Registrations rose from 1.569 million in 2022 to 1.821 million in 2023, increased to 1.899 million in 2024, and crossed 2.09 million in 2025.
Petrol vehicles continue to dominate
Petrol-powered vehicles accounted for more than 210,000 registrations during the five-month period, making them the most popular choice among buyers.
Diesel vehicles lagged behind, with around 105,000 registrations.
Electric vehicle adoption accelerates
Electric vehicles (EVs) continued to gain traction as consumers increasingly turned to alternatives that offer lower running costs and reduced environmental impact.
According to a report, inquiries at EV dealerships across Gujarat have increased by 200–300%. Registration data also points to rising demand, with EV registrations growing by 111%.
Between March 2025 and March 2026, EV registrations more than doubled, rising from 5,271 to 11,129 vehicles.
The growth highlights the expanding role of electric mobility in Gujarat’s vehicle market, even as petrol vehicles continue to account for the largest share of registration.
