Gujarat Police have underscored a significant advancement in the force's adoption of technology to boost efficiency and precision in crime investigations. It has successfully resolved 80 criminal cases over the past nine months (up to September 2025) with the aid of the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), officials announced on Thursday.

Gujarat Director General of Police Vikas Sahay stated that adopting advanced technology like NAFIS has made crime investigations faster and more accurate, underscoring Gujarat Police's dedication to smarter, professional policing. The NAFIS maintains a national database of over 1.20 crore fingerprint records of criminals arrested for serious offences, including more than 22 lakh entries provided by Gujarat.

"Every person's fingerprint is unique," said DGP Sahay, explaining that when a crime occurs and the FSL team recovers fingerprints from the scene, Gujarat Police captures and uploads them to the NAFIS portal. "If a match is found in the database, the offence is instantly detected—even if the accused is from another state--enabling swift crime resolution through this technology," he added.

Following a fingerprint match on the NAFIS portal, Gujarat Police coordinates with the relevant state police to apprehend the accused involved in the offence. A recent case highlights NAFIS efficiency, where fingerprints from the crime scene were uploaded to the portal, triggering an instant match and with prompt coordination with Maharashtra Police by sharing details of the accused, leading to the suspect's tracking and arrest within 48 hours. Maharashtra Police then handed over the accused to Gujarat Police. These fingerprints can also be used as evidence in court, the DGP said.
