Gujarat Police issued a circular addressing all vice chancellors of universities in Gujarat on Monday, appealing to them to encourage students who bring two-wheelers to the campus to wear helmets.
Despite the law in the state mandating two-wheeler riders and pillion to wear helmets, the Gujarat Director General of Police (DGP) has released a statement appealing to all university vice chancellors to promote helmet usage.
The circular stated that there are 16.4 lakh students studying in colleges across the state, and many of them use two-wheelers for commuting.
In 2023, road accidents in the state resulted in 7,854 deaths, of which 2,767 victims died for riding without helmets. Among those, 2,082 were under the age of 26.
The Government of Gujarat has also directed all employees using two-wheelers within the premises of all government offices in the state to wear helmets.
All universities in the state, both private and government, are requested to cooperate in encouraging their officers, employees, and students to wear helmets.
Notably, the Section 129 of Motor Vehicle Act 1988, makes helmets mandatory for both rider and pillion.
