Gujarat launches week-long classroom monitoring drive to evaluate learning of Classes 3-8 students

The Gujarat government has launched a state-wide monitoring drive to assess learning levels among over 40 lakh students from Classes 3 to 8 in government and grant-in-aid primary schools. The move aims to ensure that students are not lagging behind in reading, writing, and basic arithmetic skills.
Starting today, officials including CRC, BRC, TPEOs, and DIET lecturers will visit classrooms across all districts to evaluate ongoing teaching and learning activities. District Primary Education Officers (DPEOs) have been directed to conduct field visits during the week-long campaign, which will continue till November 14.
The decision follows growing concern that several students still struggle with basic literacy and numeracy despite years of schooling. Through a circular issued to all district education offices and municipal school authorities, the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training (GCERT) has instructed that this assessment be conducted in “mission mode”.
Under the campaign, teachers will conduct oral reading, comprehension, independent writing, and calculation exercises as per class level. Each student from Classes 3 to 8 will maintain a separate notebook for these core learning areas. CRC and BRC coordinators, education inspectors, and DIET faculty members will carry out regular classroom observations and record findings. Senior officials from the Directorate of Primary Education and Samagra Shiksha will also conduct surprise inspections.
If any student fails to reach the expected proficiency level, teachers are required to identify them and continue focused support even after November 14. The government has also scheduled an external evaluation for all students from Classes 3 to 8 in February 2026 to measure learning outcomes.
