Cow subsidy under scrutiny, Gujarat lags behind Goa, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra with ₹30 subsidy per animal

The issue of cow protection in Gujarat has come under scrutiny as local organisations and community leaders demand an increase in the government subsidy for cattle. Currently, the state provides a subsidy of only ₹30 per animal, lower than states such as Goa, which offers ₹150, Uttarakhand ₹80, and Maharashtra ₹50.
Despite the cultural significance placed on the cows in Gujarat, often referred to as ‘mother’ in the state, many argue that the government’s financial support is not enough.
Farmers and cowherders across the state are calling for the subsidy to be raised to ₹100 per cow, raising the need for better resources to care for their livestock.
The Gujarat Jivdaya Gauseva has requested the state government to declare the cow as the official state animal.
Dr Girish Shah of the Samast Mahajan said that an allocation of ₹300 crore to support the efforts of cow protection should be provided by the government. He urged that this funding should be distributed promptly to ensure the effective implementation of cow welfare in the state.
In addition, Dr Shah proposed the introduction of a free animal ambulance service, suggesting that one ambulance should serve every ten villages to address emergencies and improve animal welfare.
