The state’s wildlife population is steadily rising. More than 9.53 lakh wild animals, including lions, leopards, deer, vultures and peacocks, currently inhabit Gujarat’s forests and border regions.

World Wildlife Conservation Day is observed globally on December 4, and data on Gujarat’s rich wildlife heritage shows a remarkable growth over the past two and a half decades. The state’s pride, the Asiatic lion has seen its population almost triple, rising from 327 in 2001 to 891 in 2025.

Gujarat’s lakes, wetlands and river systems also attract a significant number of migratory birds during winter. More than 18 lakh migratory birds arrive every year to spend the season here. In 2024 alone, Nal Sarovar recorded 3.62 lakh birds, while Thol Sanctuary saw over 1.11 lakh visitors from abroad.

Adding to this rich biodiversity, the presence of a tiger recorded in Dahod’s Ratanmahal sanctuary has further strengthened Gujarat’s wildlife profile. Meanwhile, the Centre has approved the establishment of a cheetah breeding centre in the Banni grasslands of Kutch. Once completed, Gujarat will become home to all four big cats  lion, tiger, cheetah and leopard thriving in its natural landscapes.
