Gujarat High Court has stayed Gujarat National Law University (GNLU)’s decision to suspend a student and his immediate eviction from the hostel.

Justice Aniruddha Mayee ordered the university to allow the student to stay in the hostel after he filed a writ petition.

The student mentioned in the petition that an investigation was conducted in September 2023 regarding a complaint related to anti-ragging, which concluded with the complainants requesting an apology from the respondents.

Despite a directive from the University Grant Commission (UGC) in the matter, no apology was offered, prompting the student to inform the UGC about the situation. Following which, the UGC instructed GNLU’s registrar to look into the matter and take necessary steps to inform the student.

On September 11, the GNLU Student Disciplinary Committee issued a notice to the student, asking the student to appear over the alleged misconduct incident of July 5 and to explain the matter.

However, the student informed the committee on the same day that they had ongoing exams on September 13, 17, and 20 and won’t be able to attend the meeting.

The student then tried to meet with the authorities on September 14, but was denied a meeting.

After he was denied a meeting again on September 20, the student received a notice of his suspension over non-cooperation and was instructed to vacate the hostel room within 24 hours.

Following the writ petition, the court has issued notice to GNLU, scheduling the next hearing for November 25.
